About Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art with an explicit goal of creating Peace in the world. We practice to disable an attack against us without harming the attacker. To do so we learn to use the energy of the attack itself to unbalance the attacker and gain control of their body using joint locks, pins, and throws. Much more than a physical martial art, Aikido is also a non-dual mindfulness practice, integrating body and mind, power and compassion, with graceful, flowing movements that require deep focus to master. Partnered practice ensures equal time learning to respond to an attack and receiving the technique while learning to fall safely and softly. Because there is no competition, and because students practice at their own pace with an attitude of respect and kindness, Aikido is primarily a path of self-development.

About Our Dojo

Our name, AiSeiShinKan, means the place of uniting power and love in the heart. Love without power can be ineffective and subject to domination. Power without love can be abusive. At AiSeiShinKan we strive to be warriors of peace, allowing no harm to ourselves, and doing no harm to others.

Susan Dutton, Sensei

Susan began studying Aikido under the late Bob Graebel Sensei, who was a student of Akira Tohei Shihan and Kennan Purdy Sensei. She continues her learning under Stephen Toyoda Sensei of Tenshinkan Dojo in Chicago.

Dutton Sensei has been practicing Aikido since 2009, and has tested to the rank of 3rd kyu. She holds a teaching certificate with the Aikido Association of America.
